Will sail for food
With the crew of Wizard busy last minute this week I wasn’t sure I would make it out this week but thanks to an invite from Bill and Jed and promise of good food and drink I joined them on #222. The night started with a stiff breeze and an alert from the race committee on the WhatsApp that conditions were over the set limit but as the crew of Loyalty assembled, RC let us know things had settled into a nice 12-14 knot breeze with gust touching 20. We quickly rigged the boat and got sailing to the course south of Gould Island setting our goals to have fun, stay safe, and stay out of last. With a slight delay due to commercial traffic and a shifting wind direction the race committee set us off on a 1.1 nm course towards the bridge and a promise of close racing. With the call of all clear on the first try we were off. In the first leg the fleet split but soon most boats seemed to favor the right side of the course. As we reached the offset Bill took to the bow like a pro handling each jibe with grace and minimal shouting and Jed at the helm focused on keeping the boat under control. Through the rest of the race each of the crew settled into their roles with me setting the traveler. Boats exchanged position with each tack and jibe and the course length keeping the fleet close together. Fortunately it seems that despite some protest flags visible on boats, fleet nine completed the summer series with the majority of the fleet on the line. In the end we managed meet all of our goals with 3 boats behind us and happily sailed back into the point for the promised post sailing drinks and dinner with a view of the bridge by my host. It’ll definitely be a hard post sailing experience to beat for my own crew but we will do our best.
Next week Wizard will be back and plan to live up to the same goals while having a great time
on the water.
