A Little Bit of Everything
Tantrum coasted off its mooring at 1545 into a light and variable WSW breeze, exactly as the forecast predicted. Anticipating that wind conditions might keep the fleet south of the bridge, we sailed out of the harbor and over to the Jamestown shore, feeling the breeze begin to shift to WNW. The race committee brought the Fleet north of the bridge and set up the starting line off the Naval War College and posted a W4 for tonight’s racing.
Thanks to two general recalls, we were able to regroup and secure a clean start into the widely oscillating and building westerly. Favoring the right, we rounded the top mark among the top third of the fleet, right on track with our finishing goal for the night. A clean set at the offset followed by a less-than-perfect gybe resulted in our kite wrapping the head stay (note to self: keep the boat under the kite until made), 166 quickly moved into the bottom third of the fleet. As the breeze continued to build into the 15 plus range with gusts above 20, we took the right gate and slogged our way back to the top mark.
With a shallow rainbow glimmering in the northeast sky, the setting sun was spectacular, casting an orange glow over the fleet’s return into the harbor and marking a memorable evening of sailing. Although our final finishing position is not one to remember, any night sailing with Fleet 9, shared among five good friends, always is!
Thank you, Race Committee and congratulations, to Grace 107 for a race well sailed!
